Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any special qualifications to join the program?
No, only a desire to work, learn and have fun.
Can I join the program at the last minute?
Yes, assuming we have space available, we will just speed up the process.
If I join the program and decide to stay longer than originally planned, is that a problem?
We will do everything in our power to organise for you to stay longer.
If we want to go sight seeing on the weekends, can we walk to most locations?
Unfortunately most activities are much to far to walk to. One can hire a car or take a taxi to theses locations for minimal costs.
Can I do a diving course while I am there?
Yes, there is a full service dive school not far from the ORCA office, offering PADI certifications. If you wish to complete a diving course while on the program, let the coordinators know asap after arrival so that the necessary arrangements can be made.
Do the volunteers get involved in rehabilitation/hands-on work with animals?
During your stay there may be opportunities to assist the Plettenberg Bay Stranding Network with rescues of various stranded marine birds (including penguins), turtles, and mammals. The ORCA volunteers assist with rescues and our team is always on high alert and on standby. In times of rough seas and strong onshore wind the volunteers patrol beaches for stranded birds and animals. However, we do not always have rescues and can’t guarantee this.
What can I be expected to do on a daily basis?
Please click on our Information pack for all the activities that the volunteer will be exposed to.
Does the ORCA Foundation own a boat?
The Orca Foundation does not own a boat, our mother company, Ocean Blue Adventures does.
