ORCA Foundation Named Co-Champion of the Plett Hope Spot
February 2025
Strengthening Marine Conservation in Plettenberg Bay
The ORCA Foundation is proud to announce its official role as Co-Champion of the Plett Hope Spot, in partnership with Nature’s Valley Trust.
Originally designated in 2014 by Mission Blue, the Plett Hope Spot has now been re-designated — marking an exciting new chapter for marine conservation in Plettenberg Bay.
This renewed recognition strengthens conservation efforts along one of South Africa’s most biologically rich coastlines and positions ORCA Foundation at the forefront of protecting this globally significant marine ecosystem.
What is the Plett Hope Spot?
Located along South Africa’s Southern Cape, the Plett Hope Spot encompasses a sheltered ocean bay linking the Robberg Peninsula Marine Protected Area with the renowned Tsitsikamma Marine Protected Area — the oldest Marine Protected Area in South Africa.
This spectacular stretch of coastline supports:
- Endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphins (Sousa plumbea)
- Colonies of Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus)
- Migratory southern right whales
- Migratory humpback whales
- Great white sharks
- Eagle rays
- The endangered Knysna seahorse
The region’s ecosystems include rocky reefs, sandy beaches, estuaries, and coastal forests — all contributing to Plettenberg Bay’s role as a vital marine biodiversity hub.
The broader region is also recognised internationally as:
- A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
- A Whale Heritage Area
- An Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Area (EBSA)
ORCA Foundation: Leading as Hope Spot Co-Champion
As Co-Champion of the Plett Hope Spot, the ORCA Foundation plays a key leadership role in advancing conservation action, scientific research, community engagement, and environmental education within the bay.
Jared Harding, newly appointed Hope Spot member representing ORCA Foundation, will help drive collaborative conservation initiatives alongside Nature’s Valley Trust and Mission Blue.
Our mission aligns closely with the goals of the Hope Spot initiative:
- Conducting applied marine research
- Engaging volunteers in hands-on conservation work
- Raising awareness about marine conservation challenges
- Building strong community partnerships
This co-championship reinforces ORCA Foundation’s long-standing commitment to safeguarding Plettenberg Bay’s marine ecosystems through science, education, and collaboration.
Our Key Focus: Community Outreach & Education
At ORCA Foundation, we believe effective conservation begins within the community.
A central focus of our Hope Spot commitment is our outreach work at Siyakula Crèche in Plettenberg Bay.
Inspiring Ocean Stewards from an Early Age
Through our programme at Siyakula Crèche, we introduce young learners to:
- The importance of protecting our oceans
- Local marine species found in Plettenberg Bay
- The role dolphins, whales, sharks, and estuaries play in healthy ecosystems
- Environmental responsibility and pride in their natural heritage
Our approach includes interactive lessons, storytelling, creative activities, and engaging ocean-themed learning materials designed specifically for early childhood development.
By investing in young minds within our local community, we are helping to cultivate the next generation of ocean ambassadors — ensuring conservation in the Plett Hope Spot is not only science-driven, but community-rooted.
A Region of Ecological and Cultural Importance
Plettenberg Bay is not only ecologically significant but culturally rich. Archaeological sites such as Nelson Bay Cave and Matjes River Cave provide evidence of human history spanning over 20,000 years.
Today, descendants of the Khoisan peoples maintain cultural connections to these coastal landscapes, highlighting the deep and enduring relationship between people and ocean in this region.
Protecting the Plett Hope Spot therefore means protecting both biodiversity and heritage.
Addressing Ongoing Challenges
Despite its natural beauty, Plettenberg Bay faces environmental pressures including:
- Coastal development
- Unsustainable fishing practices
- Pollution
- Invasive species
- Climate change
The re-designation of the Plett Hope Spot brings renewed international recognition and momentum to local conservation efforts.
Through collaboration between ORCA Foundation, Nature’s Valley Trust, Mission Blue, and other local stakeholders, we are working to ensure that Plettenberg Bay remains a thriving and resilient marine ecosystem for generations to come.
