Dragon Flies

Dragonflies may seem like they are only desirable for their beauty, but their existence is quite important in our environment. In need of fresh water and a stable food source, dragonflies prefer to live around lakes and their presence indicates a healthy ecosystem. In order to have these beautiful creatures in our neighborhoods, it is important to keep our environment clean and unpolluted. Not only do we want these insects for their beauty, dragonflies prey on pests and can help control insect populations in a freshwater environment. As we destroy their habitats through pollution, we lose both their beauty and their helpful services. Since the 1950s, their population size has been diminishing and even three dragonfly species have gone extinct. If we are able to restore our natural lakes, these entire ecosystems can thrive once again and with this renewal, the dragonflies can return.
