Don’t throw it-compost it

Throwing food scraps out of the car window may seem harmless, but it may lead to harsh consequences. Food, even organic, may take months to decompose by itself. During that time, animals are attracted to the roads and can be hit by passing cars while eating or searching for the food remains. This may result in dramatic declines in animal populations. Many fruits are also imported and if their seeds spread, they may become invasive and cause harm to the native environment.

What can you do to help? Holding onto trash and disposing of it in a proper bin helps prevent environmental damage. You can also make a compost at home with a plastic bin. Add leftover food into the bin, cover, and stir once a day. After several weeks, use a sifter to harvest the smaller particles that you can use as home-grown fertiliser.
